In wireless communication systems, antenna polarization is a critical parameter that is often underestimated. Whether it’s for mobile networks, satellite links, WiFi, radar, or IoT systems, understanding and choosing the right polarization directly impacts signal transmission efficiency, system compatibility, and interference resistance.

So, what exactly is antenna polarization? What types exist? And why is it so important to your RF system? Let’s break it down.


1. What Is Antenna Polarization?

Antenna polarization refers to the orientation of the electric field vector of a radiated electromagnetic wave.
In RF systems, we focus on the electric field because antennas primarily respond to it, not the magnetic field.

Put simply:

  • If the electric field oscillates in a single plane, it’s called linear polarization.
  • If the field rotates in a helical pattern, it’s called circular or elliptical polarization.

2. Common Types of Antenna Polarization

1. Linear Polarization

  • Vertical polarization: Electric field is perpendicular to the ground
  • Horizontal polarization: Electric field is parallel to the ground
  • ±45° slant polarization: Often used in MIMO or LTE systems to improve isolation

Pros: Simple structure, strong directionality, suitable for point-to-point links
Note: If transmit and receive antennas are not aligned in polarization, signal loss occurs (can be as high as 20 dB)

2. Circular Polarization

  • The electric field rotates in a spiral. Two types:
    • Right-Hand Circular Polarization (RHCP)
    • Left-Hand Circular Polarization (LHCP)

Common in satellite communication, drones, and GNSS systems where the antenna orientation constantly changes.

Pros: Less sensitive to antenna orientation, better penetration through obstacles
Note: RHCP and LHCP are not compatible—polarizations must match


3. Elliptical Polarization

A hybrid form between linear and circular polarization. It often occurs unintentionally due to imperfect antenna structure or environmental effects. Some antennas degrade from linear to elliptical under certain conditions.


3. Why Polarization Matters to System Performance

1. Matched Polarization = Optimal Signal Transfer

When the transmitter and receiver share the same polarization, signal power is transferred efficiently, resulting in better link quality.

2. Polarization Mismatch = Severe Signal Loss

When polarizations don’t match, the signal weakens dramatically.
Example: A vertically polarized wave received by a horizontally polarized antenna can theoretically result in total signal loss (up to -∞ dB).

3. Multiple Polarizations Improve Capacity

Modern systems like 4G/5G MIMO adopt dual polarization (±45° or H+V) to increase channel isolation and network capacity.

  • Use measurement tools: A vector network analyzer (VNA) or polarization test system can confirm performance
